I think the earlier guns are that way, but later they started the "Sx999999" type of number where the x was a different letter which represented the caliber. I have guns that begin SA, SB, SC, SD, and SE. Then there's the 22MS and the 445S.
Evidently most of my guns are later production. Incidentally, all of those listed above are Monson guns.

I sure hope that the BATF will finally cave in one day & release the serial number info for Dan Wesson's. It would sure be nice to know the definite answers to some of these questions.
Here's a thread I started a while back, comparing the serial number styles.
At first, I was under the assumption that the ones with the caliber designation at the front were done starting at the Palmer plant. But as more folks chimed in, it's clear that they switched to that "Palmer style" shortly before the end of the Monson era (presumably). Again, assumptions like this could be cleared up in an instant, if we could see the production records.

I'd be amazed if they could lay hands on the info, which is different from saying they don't have it.
Probably stored with the aliens from Roswell
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
