Came here earlier in search of info for a model 12W I viewed in a shop recently,  The model 12W that I saw the other day had the exposed barrel nut; having not 'remembering' seeing this type of nut wondered if it was original, now believe that it was. Ironically while going thru my stuff today, I found a flat stamped wrench that I think was used on this style of nut....I don't know what my source was and if I might have that style of nut around here, will have to do some more searching. I digress... now I'm unable to again find the model designations and serial range info on this site. What does the W suffix denote and did I read this model is more prone to firing pin and or spring issues?

Have seen the term porkchop used here several times, i'm confused, is that the style of barrel shroud/frame fitment? I hadn't seen the fluted/relieved ? barrel shouds before this site, was that a factory feature?

While at a show last month, thought I saw someone selling a model 28? in .357, is that a good model number for .357?

W12 was a pretty early model, and the fluted barrel nut would be correct. That wrench could also be from a 15-2, mine came with a similar wrench and a matching "spud" that was used to remove the recessed barrel nut.

The Porkchop shroud referred to an early style shroud with an extension that runs downward along the front of the frame.

For the fluted/relieved shroud I think you are seeing the slotted shroud on the SuperMag revolvers.

Serial number info is pretty scarce, and Model 28 does not fit for a Dan Wesson, S&W had a Model 28 .357, the Highway Patrolman

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

That's it...now I remember, I too got the flat wrench with the added spud on a model 15 and decided to use one of my T handles instead.

Whatever the mystery model is, it has the DW detachable barrel set-up with a very heavy full length shroud. I should have paid more attention.

Thank you for your answers.

Might have been the Heavy shroud, which sometimes seems more massive that the Vent Heavy, even though the underlug is the same size.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
