Hey y'all. Just picked up a DW Model 44 - was surprised to see it has the ported barrel.
I seem to recall seeing somewhere that it isn't recommended to shoot cast in one of these barrels.
Izzat true? Sometimes folks put on their imagination cap and think all sorts of things that never come to be and I wonder if this is one of those given the holes are at the end of the barrel and is smooth so nothing there to shave the lead.
Since I cast my own I wonder if powder coating would mitigate using cast in one of these.
I really like my 300 gn cast bullets in a 44. I also cast a 265 gn that is a great deer and hog round. It'd be a big disappointment if I couldn't use 'em.

The problem isn't the lead- it's the fouling. You can certainly shoot the ported barrel- just be certain to clean the inside of the shroud often. All the gasses and crud will collect relatively quickly so neglect can cause problems.
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Pretty much what I figured as well. I have small pin drills if the ports get clogged and my wrench is on the way from CZ so I can get at the barrel.
I'll likely shoot sized powdercoated just because I hate cleaning out lead fouling.
BTW - something I discovered with my rifles - if you treat the barrels with Frog Lube your cleanup and lead fouling is reduced tremendously.
In fact most times from the range I just run a dry patch and the barrel is clean. You just have to follow the directions exactly.

Brojon,
Dan Wesson manuals/ brochures state that lead bullets should not be used with the " Power Control" barrels. There are also a couple of articles in the members section stating that lead bullets and ported tubes are not compatible.
I have used Slip 2000 coating to successfully minimize fouling and ease the removal of residue when shooting the power control. It may be similar to frog Lube

That's why I reckon I'll powder coat them - a technology that wasn't around back then.
It works well in my Ruger Super Blackhawk so I feel good about it here. In any case nothing that can't be cleaned.
I was hoping for some real world observations - even CastBoolits didn't have any 1st hand I could find.

Good lord people are still using frog lube??? Isn't that just coconut oil?+1 on the slip2000 EWL. That's some good stuff.
Not to my knowledge. Have you looked at any of the videos where Frog Lube came out on top in a comparison of all top products in rust prevention?
The stuff works, it's inexpensive and it smells minty fresh 🙂

Those 44 and 744 models usually came with two barrels in the factory box, one with compensated holes and one without, so you could choose. Sounds like your other barrel went walkabout.
I put a call in to the gun store and asked them to look for any included items.
Thanks for the tip - I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Definitely do not shoot lead rounds through the ported barrel. I made the mistake once and had to take the gun to a gunsmith to have it removed. The lead builds up between the barrel and shroud and makes a total mess. Much better to pick up another un-ported barrel to use with lead bullets.
I have three DWs .22, .357 and .445 Supmag. Love all three of them. You will never find a stronger or more accurate revolver.
Take care and keep your powder dry!
Brojon, that other barrel probably disappeared 30+years ago. DW should have them but the might only have stainless. I am sceptical of the powder coated bullets too. Even copper jacketed bullets have powder residue which builds up fast. Once it is forced into the shroud it really has no place to go.

Nope they have blued as well. Brojon, email shawn at DW and he'll get one ordered for you. His email is shawn@cz-usa.com
