Jerry, That's a real good question that I'm not qualified to answer but I will give my opinion. If the action works fine than I don't think the bluing worn on the solid steel of the recoil shield means anything. If that was stainless you wouldn't even notice. My local gunshop owner just commented that most dans he takes in on trade look almost new. He just took in two but I now have seven .357's and want other calibers. I think that most people that bought dans could not deal with the removable barrels and when they spit powder or shaved lead or bound up the cylinder just quit shooting them, hence the preponderance of almost new guns available. If you look at Smiths and colts of the same age its rare to see one in such shape. If the rest of the gun looks good than all it means IMHO is that someone actually used it. Many dans were used by LEOs who rarely fired their weapon except to qualify when they had to. If the dan was their backup gun they rarely used it.
Another point: they are tough as railroad tracks with actions that can be repaired by just about anyone. That was due to the genuis of Carl Lewis. ARs are similar in that they are modular. If a part breaks it is easy to replace without hand fitting. Pythons, Manhurens, and Korths are hand made and fitted. Owners don't shoot them. Dans are special AND tough. If the price is right, buy it. OD

I was reading someplace that imprint on the recoil plate like that indicates hot loads. Yes, No?
Not necessarily. I mean, it can, but looking at that pic, I would me more inclined to think this gun has digested quite a few thousand rounds with normal ammo.
As long at the gun in the photo locks up nicely & functions properly, I think it'll be a fine shooter.

Yep I agree with the others that gun has been shot some but as long as the rest of it checks out, grab it. Takes a lot more shooting than that to wear out a Dan. I think price is fair too in todays markket.
