Is there a time frame where DW put on a particular shroud type? What I mean is, did they use standard shrouds up to X date and then change to Vented, then Vent Heavy? I see alot of guns on auction sites with similar production dates, (at least claimed) with all manner of shroud types. Is there a way to estimate a guns age based on shroud type? I know people change them all the time so it may not be a reliable indicator but I'm curious.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

All shroud types; plain, vented, and vented/heavy, were available during the Monson years. There was no relationship between shroud style and production year. The exception would be the pork-chop style shrouds which were only available on the early guns such as the models 11 and 12.
I'm not sure about the Palmer years, but The Norwich years seem to have offered the vented/heavy only.
If Im wrong someone will correct me.

While Zoom is not technically wrong, once the vented style shrouds became more popular, the non-vented (plain) saw a dramatic decrease in production. Both heavy and standard weight remained popoular and there was no wide swing in production as I can tell.
The longer barrels 10" 12" 15", also while technically available.. seemed to have had a time when they were more apt to have been produced than in later years.
This is all in relation to the small (15-2 size) frames.
Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box
in that order.

Zoommb & Pine are both on a roll here.
Zoommb's right; any pre "-2" Porkchop gun is for sure exempt from the V or VH shroud designs. This includes the 11, 12, 14, 15, 14-1, 15-1 DW's in .38 Spl & .357 Mag.
Pine's right too; the onset of the 15-2 model, brought out an almost (maybe an exact) simultaneous release of "Standard (non-vented)", "standard Heavy", "Vented", "Vented Heavy" shrouds for the 15-2 model. Both of the Vented shroud styles were an instant hit (probably because of a certain "brand-X" {Colt} influence at the time), although the "V" seems to be more favored over the "VH", from what current auction sites seem to show. Both of the non-Vented (especially the standard "H") shroud were less popular.
From what I have seen, most of the 10+" barrels were of the non-heavy variety…again, largely due to a buyer's concern of barrel weight, I'm sure. However, there have been a few instances where an original buyer simply said "give me the works" & ordered some long BA's in VH variety.
Vented shrouds became more popular through the Palmer years & seem to have settled into a DW standard during the Norwich years, where I have yet to see a factory Norwich BA come through without the Vented treatment.
The one caveat during the Palmer years was that all Fixed Barrel guns had no option of vents, these (except for the comp barrels) were all produced with a Heavy, non-Vented shroud, no matter the barrel length…
Here is a fast education to the various DW shroud types LINK Here
I don't recall seeing a large frame DW with no Vents. Both the Heavy & non-heavy shrouds all have vents along the top rib. Some even have slots…but that's a whole 'nuther subject.

That's a beautiful example right there. Each time I see that pic, I turn another shade greener with envy.
I guess I did contradict myself there, huh? I should have said that I don't recall seeing a large frame removable barrel DW with no vents. That's what I get for not proofreading before hitting the go button.

Awhile back I had a Monson Broschure of accessories available and it seemed that all the styles of shrouds were available for all models, this even included the special hooded front sight and optional Bomar sight and slotted shrouds. Unfortunately the broschure got lost when we moved from Fl to Ky or I would have photoed it to the archives.

Large frame removeable with no vents do exist... I just sold a 744 BA to a member here a little while ago with no vents.

Did you keep any of that one? Do you recall which plant was it made in? And how long was it?I know, lots of questions.
Scorpio, that often reminds folks of either that movie, or one of Joker's scenes in Batman.
