I tried to sight in my 744 with 8" barrel today with my hunting ammo (240gr XTP over 24gr 296. 1350-1400fps). Looking at the ballistics charts, if I sight in at 10yds dead on, it will be dead on again around 70 yds and 3" low at 100yds. Set up the gun and rest, shot at 10 yds, ~1-1.5" high with the rear sight bottomed out at 10 yds, at 40 yds it was around 2.5-3" high, almost 4-5" high at 70 yds? Both my EWK FO front sight and DW red ramp sight are the same height. EWK has the partridge front sights that are taller, but does anyone made taller contrast or FO front sights?

240gr isn't a light bullet for the 44 magnum; it's what most people use? I don't need to go up to a 300gr for deer. It's a slightly hotter load (most 240 grain bullet 44 Mag loads are around 1280 fps) but pretty much duplicates the factory Hornady 240gr XTP load. The point is that with that load, I am shooting way high, even with the rear sight bottomed out.
My powder puff 44 mag loads (240gr LSWC at 950 fps) seem to be able to dial in POI/POA better, but I was surprised that a more typical 44 mag load won't sight in with the factory sights.

I started at 10 yds, rear sight bottomed out, it was high by around 1-1.5". I went to 40 yds, now 2.5" high. 70 yds, now 4-5" high, all with the rear sight completely bottomed out. The numbers are close if I sight in for like 120yds, which isn't really practical for deer hunting in the woods. At 25yds would have been around 2" high or so still. At 70 yds, it still seemed to be climbing.
My CC got hacked this weekend, so once the replacement come in, I will order the EWK partridge sight assortment.

A question for you, did you try reducing your load just a bit? I reload also and I have used every bullet weight for 44 mags and many in the XTP. Believe me do not worry about having enough power to take deer down. You will be shooting thru them even if you back off a little. A lighter bullet may help. I have seen it go the other way also. Powder charges will move your group around, it is worth the try.

I am trying to stay close to the Hornady factory recipe for the load, which is 1350 FPS. My powder puff 44 mag load is Bullseye under a 240gr LSWC at around 950 FPS; that zero's, but is much less FPS than I want! I am not sure if backing it off to 1280 would effect the POA/POI issue much. For now, I will just hold a bit low as the season is done in a week, so there is no time to order new components (almost out of 240gr XTP bullets) and do up a new batch to try to sight in.
I am actually looking at putting a J Point Micro on the gun for next year; I liked my TRS-25 on it, but with the amber/red coating on the lense, it makes it darker in the woods and harder to see distinguish the brown deer vs the brown leaves in the background. Other red dots use an amber/orangish or blue/greenish tiny and the J Point uses a clear acrylic. I had a Burris 2x scope on it which was nice and clear, but the gun dropped out of my shoulder holster (though the snap was fully snapped and it wasn't) and bent the eyepiece and dented the tube, so I am going to send that one back to Burris for replacement. Much less wobble with the red dot than with the scope, but the red dot should be more accurate than the irons since it is a 4 MOA dot versus the wider front sight.
