So I have a new to me model 40 and I was looking at the cylinders while trying to figure out why (while figuring out reloading stuff)  my 180gr xtps (.357) would slide through the cylinders but the 200gr ftx (.358) bullets would get "hung up" in the barrel ed of the cylinders and I found this:

Is is little "lip" in the cylinder normal?

And I didn't get a barrel gap tool with this one.  Might anyone know of the proper gap for this ?   and since I'm already picking everyone's brain, what is the gap for a 44 mag one?  Is it the same as for a model 40 or for the 15-2?   All answers greatly appreciated.

Most revolvers have a lip like that at the front of the cylinder to help align the bullet to the bore.

Thanks for letting me know. I don't think I'd ever have noticed it if I wasn't looking.

Chamber throats, totally normal, helps align bullet with forcing cone of barrel.
BC gap should be between .002"-.006" on the tightest chamber.  I run most of my supermags at .003, reduces flash and flame cutting and keeps velocities highest.

Thanks!  It has a tiny bit of flame cutting (barely catches a fingernail) but I definitely want to keep it from getting worse if I can. I'll have to go digging around for my gauges.

Almost all of the 40/740's have some flame cutting, it turned out to be a self limiting thing and didn't progress to a catastrophic stage like Ruger had feared.  Just the same, I'd run the gap tight to limit pressure loss and flame cutting.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

I thought the Ruger's suffered from flame-cutting much worse than Dan's, which was why they pulled them from their Production line ?

That's what I meant, and why Ruger pulled them off market.

Since I seem to have started two threads that are pretty related, I've posted my latest finding after my first reloads in the reloading topic (the one about the 357 maximum reloading).   I'll tell you, this gun is crazy fun to shoot. 🙂
