I have a DW Monson 15-2 with a six inch barrel
amazingly accurate!
I notice that sometimes it spits a little powder backward towards the face
is this normal, or can this be solved by simply checking the cylinder gap? (I have a tool on order from EWK)
with thanks in advance
Yes. Your problem is probably the gap. Many nice Dan Wessons are available because owners did not learn how to manage the gap. Imho, .006 is too much. However, if you go less you must check all six cylinders and make sure they all have adequate clearance. The front of the cylinder may be less than perfectly perpendicular. If you leave less than .04 on the " proudest" cylinder you should clean the front of the cylinder after several dozen rds. Be aware the cylinder may expand and bind as it heats up with use and you may have to adjust the gap. These problems are why DW recommemded .006. With a small amount of practice you should be able to judge the gap by sight and dispense with the gauge and do it very quickly.
Blondie, can I call you blondie? I meant .004 on my previous post. Also after tightening nut check the gape again. When cleaning the gun open the cylinder and screw the barrel in as far as the threads go. Then back out the barrel to the right depth. This keeps corrosion from the threads. I make sure the threads are oiled. Clean the threads lightly with a brass brush once in a while. Ditto for barrel nut threads. I recieve great pleasure from cleaning and lubing my guns. Kind of like pruning my bonsai.

If you've not gapped a DW cylinder before a tip. It needs to just lightly contact the gauge when gapping. Too much pressure to "make it fit right" just pushes the cylinder back against the spring-loaded ball bearing rear lock. I've found that after setting the gap I get less rotation when tightening the nut if I open the cylinder & push against the rear of the barrel while tightening. Do check afterwards anyway though.

I didn't know how to use it.”
