How do you know when you need to replace the springs that are part of the DW spring kit?

Don't buy the DW spring kit--most of them will never need to be replaced. Wolff has the springs you need for the hammer and trigger.

Carefull on the springs....
I installed a set of Wolf springs, and as I pulled the old ones out, I noticed that the person before me had done a "cough cough" PERSONALIZED spring job...
The regular factory spring was cut down to what must be 5 or 6 pounds... it was a good inch or less shorter than the 7.5 I installed.
It was a bit TOO soft if that's possible...
So take a look at what's inside and the "gunsmithing" done previously... some is better than others
