The material you want to use will depend on what finish you desire. I used to use a product called Autosol to polish the aluminum engine cases on my old British motorcycles. Autosol makes products for other types of metals, including stainless steel.

Here's mine in process now

I have most of the last 2 weeks of December off, so I plan to tear it down and get my internals smoothed out and polished. Some external polishing may be easier to do in pieces as well
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Steve, I am going to get the Mother's Alum polish, but what are you using to apply? Scotch Brite pad? For surface scratches are you going to resort to a high grit sandpaper? I was thinking of using some 000 grit steel wool...this has worked great for refurbishing beat up blades on the custom knives I build.

Depending on the depth of the scratch/dent/ding, I am using the least invasive of very fine grit sandpaper, green or white ScotchBrite, or very fine steel wool. I always start with the least abrasive, and work up until the blemish is fixed. Also, remember that you are looking at that scratch MUCH more closely than anuone else will.
So far I'm just using a cloth with the Mothers, I'm thinking of finishing it with some wax that I will work in with very fine steel wool and then buff out. It's a work in process, and the nice thing about Stainless is that unless you do something pretty stupid, you can fix your mistakes fairly easily.
