Do heavy and vented barrel shrouds add value to a 15-2 pistol pack as compared to standard?
I have a chance to purchase a 15-2 Pistol pac in decent shape. No paper work and it was sort of alluded to as a VH. Well I have finally seen the pics and it is standard. It's a grand with shipping and insurance tossed in with the price. Ambivalence has set in.

Press on regardless.

Not such a bad deal overall, except that the 8" has benn drilled and tapped for a scope rail.
I you're trying to get a perfect, original Pack, this is not it.
If you want something to shoot and enjoy, and you'd like to scope the 8",
Not such a bad deal
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I'm with those 2 guys (Lord help me. I can't believe I just said that!). A grand is a lot of money, but I think you're getting a lot of stuff. If, however, you want a true pack, this isn't it. If you like to hunt, I bet you would love that 8" scoped. Can you still hunt white tail with a pistol up there?
It all comes down to what you are looking for.

I haven't seen a pack go for $1k or less in quite a while. $1k for this pack isn't bad, depending on the condition. It doesn't have the extra sights, buckle, keys and paperwork which would probably another $100 to it. If you don't like the scope rail just take it off and plug the holes with threaded plug screws (another $20/doz). If you're really interested in it, I'd ask him to take the rail off and show you some pics of the shroud to insure it's not marked up and that the mounting holes are drilled properly.

I have to agree with the other guys pretty much on this one. I think in the present market $1000 is about right for the pac, not a steal but not over priced either. It is incomplete but you can fill in the missing things from Ebay or GB, it is kind of fun to hunt down the missing parts. Like Harly said just put plugs in the drilled shroud, then you always have the option of scoping it. Or eventually you could replace the whole shroud and sell that one.
As to your question of whether vented or heavy shrouds add value, I would say yes, but how much is impossible to quantify. I think more people want vented barrels, but IMO nonvented are harder to come by and more rare. The deciding factor here is whether you will be happy with this style barrel for you.
