Been quite for a while, but I now have another question. Pertaining to my latch problems, I took my gun to a Gunsmith to check it out. He removed the latch and polished several areas with a Dremel buffing wheel and put it back together.

However, something is still grabbing when you depress the latch to open the cylinder. As if it were hitting against something when you depress the latch.

Sorry to be such a PITB, but does anyone have an idea of something else to try.confusedconfused

I know I've seen your other discussion of this problem, but I'm a pretty old guy with a bad memory, so if I cover old territory, please forgive me.

Question: Do you feel exactly the same "grabbing" when you depress the latch while unlatching from the frame, AND when you depress the latch when it is not engaged in the frame?

Answer: Yes, then your problem is internal the the latch, latch spring, and the part of the crane containing the latch assembly. Is that little U shaped spring clean and in good condition, no kinks?

Answer: No, your problem is in the lockup of the latch into the frame. The possibilities include:

1) A burr or some roughness in the latch/notch interface. This may include a slightly mis-machined notch in the frame that has always been there. Very close examination of the latch and notch under bright light and magnification may help

2)Make certain that the notch is flawlessly clean, a dental pick may be required.

3) There may be a misalignment in your crane that slightly binds the lockup of the latch and notch that you do not notice when closing the cylinder. The force in play when closing the cylinder is much more than the force applied to that very small latch when opening the cylinder. One to the things that could have been a little better refined on the DW design is the shape and size of the cylinder latch.

Good Luck, and keep asking questions.

Steve

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks Steve.

My limited knowledge tends to make me believe that there is some slop in the slot that the latch moves in. Because sometimes, if the latch is in just the right position it slides effortlessly, and other times it seems to hang. Just my observation-may mean nothing. At best-pure speculation.

Take some close up pictures or bring that Dan over here!   Is it a 15-2 or a porkchop? Have you had the side plate off and done a tune up? On the 15-2's a half moon clip holds things together it maybe broken or worn!   Porkchop does not have the half moon using the shroud to hold things together!

May have just screwed up. How long is the latch retaining screw supposed to be, and how far should it screw into the Crane? I apparently screwed mine in  too far, and now can't get it out. Did I screw it in past the threads and therefore can't screw it out?

The latch still works great though. Will this require a Gunsmith?

If this happens when the latch is not engaged in locking the cylinder in place (just randomly when the cylinder is open) then I'd say your issue is with the latch spring or the fit of the latch to the crane

I did the same thing once. I was lucky - managed to get the allen wrench into the screw and carefully line it up and unscrew til it caught in the threads and came out. If you succeed, only screw it in enough to stop the latch from coming out - usually the head of the screw will be close to even with the outside of the crane.

Hey snake-eye, must have been in the stars-or something. I actually got my latch screw out tonight. Don't know if the planets were aligned just so, or what, but I was successful.

Won't do that again. (I hope).big-grinbig-grin

I have owned a DW where this was obviously a problem, the screw had apparently been drilled out and replaced with a roll pin, making it a permanent sort of fix

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Koko - Congrats on getting the screw out!occasion

Steve - Some early DW's did have roll pins instead of screws. I guess they changed so cleaning would be easier.
