WAY, WAY, too much. I figured that the serial number being very low (012) and having "IHMSA" included in it , meant a special series of guns  and that would make it worth more.  What do I know?

However, they refunded my money completely and are keeping me informed of the progress of the investigation, so I have no issues with them.

Funny, Jon actually sounded very nice to me, of course, we had different reasons for talking than you and he did.  Well, in any case, ATF and UPS and the police are all investigating.  We'll see what comes of it.

Just think about this. You report the gun missing. You get your money back, but the seller collects the insurance. Where's the gun. Think about it.

Obviously that scenario is a possibility.  Eventually someone is going to say "hey, I recognize that gun. It was reported stolen" and then that person reports it and someone goes to jail unless he can buy off ATF or whomever necessary.

Also, (let's assume this has collector's value) there are a lot of collectors who will buy something stolen, even something as valuable as an original by a major artist, just to have it; even knowing they can't tell about or show it to anyone.  I don't understand that.  If I have a collectors piece I want to be able to show it to friends who share the same passion.

If I never get that gun, then I never get that gun.  However, I would like to know what happens in the investigation.

I feel sorry for you. I know how painful this is. I too fell in love with the gun, with the #012, but remember that number does not indicate the order in which the gun was built. The gun was built for memebr 012. That in itself was significant enough for me to buy the gun, but I became good friends with the guy before me who had a deal with Doug and Jon to buy the gun, and simply could not in good faith complete the transaction. Don't you trust those guys for a moment.

Listen to me, this gun is bad ju ju.  I started looking at Freedom Arms. I can't tell you how nice FA's are, and they shoot extremely well. DW's are nice, but if you want a real American classic, look on Gunbroker and buy a good used FA in the calibur of your choice.

Good luck,  bye

I actually found a beautiful 445S (7445) for the same money and it included about $700 worth of accessories and ammo.

BTW, I already own an FA .500WE and I love it.  As much as I love DW's, there is nothing on the planet made as well as an FA revolver.  The fit and finish are incredible as is the feel.

Zoom,

Are you sure the ATF and UPS are involved?

Or is the guy you are dealing with telling you they are involved?

This whole story stinks to high heaven and the whole "UPS employee admitting to handling the gun / union rep intervention / etc." is completely unbelievable.  That is a Federal  crime.

You might consider contacting the BATF yourself.  If you have already, good job!  If not, think about it.

The way I see it, best case this is Fraud &/or Insurance Fraud, worse case it is a Federal crime.  Either way, IMHO, the authorities need to know about it.

I don't think there is bad ju-ju with that gun, but the seller is another story!

dusty trail…..what a great name. You know my very best friend is a cop. In fact we gre up together. Even more, he's my first cousin, and we went into the Marine Corps together when we were 18. He went to Okinowa and I went to Vietnam. My point is that he and his wife used to know Roy Rogers and Dale Evens. He used to stay with them in Cal sometimes and is still in contact with Dusty….their son. My cousin was on the mounted, and somehow he met Roy years ago and they became friends.

Now, your assertion that this whole story smells of manure is right. I would not believe a word of the sellers. I know when I smell a rat.  As far as UPS goes, they screen very carefully. I find it very hard to believe an employee would open a package, steal a gun, then retape the package so no one could detect it was opened, then hide the gun all while working on the job. First if all, no need to open the package. No way in my book. No….this was a preconsived plan IMO. Belive me, there are dirty deeds afoot.

Dusty:

I was the one who got ATF and UPS involved.  I did it as soon as I knew the gun was missing.  I only included the "UPS em[ployee" thing to show the communication I received from the seller.  I  have since contacted UPS to verify but have received no response.

I'm just watchin' to see what happens.

Zoommb,

I glad your money was refunded and I hope the authorities are able to resolve this issue.

I'm going to leave the post listed in case someone visiting the forum has information that may help you but since the discussion is a little off track at this point I'm locking the post.

Best of Luck,

Jody
