LOL true!
I just bought a VH12” BA with a drilled/tapped scope base. It’s in rough condition so I think I’m gonna send it to Bob and have the frame and BA blued so they match. And if Bob salvages the 15” shroud I’ll have it blued to match too. I just gotta find a 15” barrel for the shroud.

Update: Bob called and said someone had a squib and then fired another round into it. Expanded the barrel into the shroud. He said he may be able to save the shroud, but will be ruining the barrel in the process of removal. There’s also a chance he may have to cut it off and make the shroud a 10”. Ugghhh!!! After what I paid for this Dan, that hurts bad!!! Hopefully he can at least save the shroud.
Holy crap. Sorry to hear about this Kurt.
I wonder how he knew the barrel expanded into the shroud without being able to take off the barrel assembly?? Maybe from the outside he noticed a bulge in the shroud under certain lighting conditions?? Or I suppose you could see it by looking in the barrel with a flashlight?
That’s one critical thing to be aware of with these long barrel assemblies is shooting powder puff soft loads through them you run the risk of sticking a bullet.
If DW would just offer to make a 15" barrel assembly…maybe someday. They would sell well.

Just catching up from a week on the road. Sorry to hear the bad news, Kurt. Squibs just suck, but on an almost irreplaceable barrel - it hurts even more. Hopefully you can find a new one. Is EWK still making barrels? He once made me a custom 106mm barrel as that is the length required to be legal up north here; but that was years ago.

I laugh everytime someone mentions EWK making barrels. He has not made any since 2016-17 and has removed them from his website. I think it's safe to say he won't be making barrels anytime soon.
It's a shame though as he made awesome stuff

I met with him a few weeks ago to get a couple barrel nuts and a tool for my 44. He said he is busier than ever with his business so probably not in the near future but someday....maybe. What a really good guy, met me on a Sunday so I could fix it before I went out of town.

Several years ago I picked up a 10 inch 41mag. The barrel nut was damaged. The seller was open about it. I got it for a low price because of this. He had the gun for years, and never removed the barrel. For some reason he thought it would be a good idea to remove the barrel and buggered the nut. (The barrel gap is good) I thought it would not be too hard to fix. I bought a new nut and wrench. I read all the posts and tried to remove the nut. Just like yours it would not move. The gun shoots great so I left it for another time. I read you post and got interested again in fixing it. Did all the things you did and again the nut would not move. A new 41barrel 10inch, I believe will be next to impossible to find. So I think I am just going to shoot it like it is, since it does not affect the performance only cosmetic.

I would have done the same thing, but unfortunately the barrel gap on mine was 12-thousandths. Way too big. It would most certainly spit lead out each side when fired. I didn’t want to risk injury to myself or anyone else so I gotta get her fixed.
Glad to hear yours is usable as is, that saves you a lot of $$ and headaches!

Update on the stuck 15” barrel:
Bob called and said he cannot get the barrel off because the squib issue expanded the barrel just enough that the barrel will not turn easily. He asked my permission to use an EZ-Out on the muzzle to try getting the barrel to unscrew from the frame. Of course, that will destroy the end of the barrel, but he might be able to save the shroud. If that doesn’t work, it’s time to cut off the BA and make the 15” shroud a 10”.
He called me again this morning and said he got it apart and saved the shroud!! Woot!! The EZ-Out worked. Cost $175 labor. Not too bad. Plus it cost me $102 to ship the gun to Bob via UPS.
Now I just need a replacement 15” barrel.

Bob said I could have the bulged barrel cut down and rethreaded to a 10” or 12”, I believe the squib was in the last 3” of the 15” barrel. I don’t know a place that would do the cut & threading though. I don’t think EWK does it anymore and Bob didn’t offer either. I guess I could talk to my FFL and see if they could or know of a gunsmith.

I’d pay $450 for another 15” barrel!!! I recently bought a blued 12” BA with a drill/tapped scope base for $785. Unfortunately it is in rough shape and needs re-blued, so I’m going to be sending it to DW (Bob) soon. I’ll put that on this pistol until I can find another 15” barrel.
