Hello Gents,
It's a 6" full underlug with a top vented rib and yes it's ported. Not too sure if it's a Monson, Palmer or Norwich but the revolver is a 44MAG from Monson, Mass.
The revolver came with two barrels, one ported and one non-ported (installed). Before I hit the range I double checked the barrel/cylinder gap and it was off so I figured good a time as any to remove the barrel and get familiar with the system . . . this lead to a couple of long days . . .
The barrel nut came off with a little more than usual effort and I thought I was home free, however, the barrel nut came off only after threading the lower part of the barrel into the lower section of the shroud.
Yes, I know I should have been paying more attention but to be honest I wasn't expecting the shroud to be threaded all the way inside.
I did manage to get the barrel out of the shroud but buggered the front threads (yes, I tried the forum trick with the threaded rod and jam nuts but it didn't work)
Please be gentle with the comments boys, I know I pulled a bonehead move

Sounds like you did the same thing I did several years ago. Yes I am a bonehead at times too. Small frame shrouds will allow the barrel to slide through from either end, Large frame shrouds only go one way though and if the barrel nut sticks you can screw the barrel up into the shroud where there are no threads at least not before you just put them there. Believe it or not you don't have to turn it that hard to do it. Before I realised it I had destroyed a barrel, I saved the shroud by polishing the new threads back out. Hard lesson learned. If the barrel nut is stuck and the barrel unscrews from the frame you still can't get the barrel out of the shroud on a large frame until you get the nut off (at least not on mine). Does this sound like what happened to you.

I had this happen too one time, but caught on before it was too late and just backed the shroud out little by little as the barrel unscrewed from the frame and then had to seperate the assembly. These problems are all results of previous owner's never taking the barrels off after many rounds of use.

I'm not too sure what happened but the barrel nut came off and the barrel was partially threaded into the shroud.
The cylinder end of the barrel seems fine and the threads are good. The muzzle end was buggered up by me removing it 🙁
Is it possible to "thread" the inside of the shroud with the barrel? I'll take off the shroud tonight for some pics but they looked really regular to me and "cutting" that fine of a thread through the barrel would have left some metal shaving one would think. There were none.
I'm trying to locate another barrel shroud but in Canada it's more than a little difficult. If any Canuks have a spare 44MAG shrould please let me know.

Here's some pictures, and yeap the shroud is completely threaded from the cylinder end up to the ported section.
Sorry the pictures aren't better but close-up shots are a PIA.
So any ideas as to why it's threaded so?[Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found]

I am betting someone forced a barrel through it the wrong way. It looks about like the one I messed up a few years back in a stupid fit of stubbornness. The good news is the shroud is fine, attach a strip of sandpaper to a dowel, put it in a drill and polish the inside of the shroud until the barrel slides in and out without resistance. As for the barrel threads you will need to see a smith for that one, but since you have another barrel you are good to go for now at least. Let us know how she comes out if you decide to do what I did.

I'm going to try the sandpaper/dowel trick. Will let you know how it turns out.
After looking at the muzzle end of the shroud, this pistol was man-handled more than once. There are some really odd marks across the threads.
If I don't manage to find a new shrould I might have to take a shot at making up a new one. Something along the lines of the Dan Wesson PPC guns.
Ah, the hobbie of handguns takes many twists and turns 😀

Will let you know how it goes gents 🙂
Hope this doesn't offend but are there any dimensioned drawings out there for shrouds?
I know you can still order some from DW however, they are over 100USD and can not be legally imported into Canada w/o a lot of paper work and cost (likely double the purchase price).
Again, not trying to start any trouble or step on toes.
