I've read recently that S&W is going to a barrel and shroud similar to the DW's on some models. I've also read that they can't be removed by the owner but must be sent back to the factory.
I read on one post that the one was loosing up. Doesn't make sense to me not to include a wrench to tighten the nut.
Anyone seen the new guys?
My guess is that when Bob Serva owned the company and partnered up with S&W to make these guns.

This auction is one of Bob Serva's auctions look at the email address of the seller. rserva@stny.rr.com Bobs new Co. is Fusion if I remember correctly.
I am sure that to make these with DW that Bob sold limited rights to S&W to produce guns using the tension system.
Here is the text from the auction so we can keep it even after the auction is gone.
"Dan Wesson/ Smith & Wesson Hybrid Revolver 45 acp, w/moon clips This is a very unique and collectable revolver. This is a Hybrid Revolver made in conjunction with the Late Jin Cirillo and past president of Dan Wesson Firearms, Bob Serva. Only 6 of each caliber were made as prototypes, these were manufactured with collaboration between Smith and Wesson producing the frames and Dan Wesson Firearms producing the barrel assembles. These all have interchangeable barrel assemblies, these barrels and frames have the same threads as the current and past production of Dan Wesson Revolvers. They are finely finished and extremely rare. This one is a 45 acp 6 shot revolver in Stainless steel with a 4 inch barrel assembly, Marked Dan Wesson Firearms Norwich, NY. Also comes with (5x) 45 acp moon clips. The serial numbers start with JCN on this model, this stands for Jim Cirillo Series, N-Frame. If you have any questions please feel free to email us. rserva@stny.rr.com Shipped to your FFL for your pick up. Thank you,"

There was a fellow who had a Dan Wesson and A S&W 460 when his 460 came loose at the barrel nut he relized that they were made similar, He contacted S&W about getting a different barrel length and was told that they can only be changed at the factory.
We as DW owners know different but I think that is the only rights that S&W has or had purchased from DW. This is of course only an opinion I have no proof or factual information.

If I'm not mistaken the patents should have expired by now. The longest a patent is good for is 20 years so the Karl Lewis patents would have expired by the latet 80's.
I think this is a control thing with S&W and creates extra revenue when customers send in guns for changes, etc.
Just one more opinio...
I just field stripped my wifes new Walther/Smith & Wesson P22 and guess how the barrel is held in place? Yep, its a little 3.4 inch auto that sits in a collar with a shroud and barrel nut holding it in tension, reminiscent of a Dan Wesson. And, the gun has an option that comes with two barrels, one 3.4 inch and one 5 inch with a barrel weight/compensator to fill in the extra room at the end of the barrel. Sure looks like someone was looking at a Dan Wesson when they drew that one up on the drawing board !!!!
