Friend of a friends father passed a bunch of years ago and he's been sitting on this Dan Wesson and recently asked if i'd be intersted

I'm not sure what model this is

He believes (but isn't sure) that his father was the original owner, got it pre-1980 and barely shot it

In order to purchase this I would sell my stainless Ruger Security 6, so I need to make a decision (and figure out what the Ruger is worth)

Dan Wesson or Ruger ?

He wants $750 for this DW, just the gun, nothing else

Very nice Dan Wesson Model 15-2 750.00 is a bit high for just the gun with no tool, shim, box or manual.

Check out Gunbroker and see what some of Dans are going for.

For that price on the DW 15-2, I'd keep the stainless Ruger Security Six, regardless of it's value.

If the DW is in as good shape as the photos appear to show and you can save the cost of shipping and sales tax by buying from a "friend" then the $750 is not too bad in the current fast rising market. In 6 months it will be over $850. Try to bargain, I try never to pay asking price unless I can't live without it.big-grin

Even 50 off would be good. Mention that you will have to purchase a wrench and shim which will likely exceed that.

"in the current fast rising market"

That's one of the things that worries me. Sooner or later this bubble is going to burst - it always does. That's one of the reasons I NEVER pay "future" prices based on a hot market (got burned on a condo in 1987 like that, took 20 years of renting it before I could unload it - lesson learned)

I haven't been keeping up with market price for 15-2s but a quick look at the completed auctions, $700-850 is a pretty common final bid.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Ron and Snake-eye are correct. Reasonable price. I doubt the value of quality guns no longer produced will be a bubble. Guns are not real estate. In fact, in bad times values of guns are likely to go up more. Dan Wessons have steadily gone up in value for the last 9 years I have been watching. As much or more percentage wise as Pythons.

I don't think you would get much for the Ruger. If finances preclude both, keep the Ruger. If the Old Lady won't let you get both, get a new Old Lady. JMHO.

If you are talking about Glocks and current mass manufactured pistols selling at a premium today, which you can find, I would agree with you.  But an out of production pistol that will never be produced again (I don't see CZ bringing them back), known for quality and accuracy, with an avid collector following, and unique design with functional barrel swapability is not going to see a market bubble "pop".   We are headed into hyperinflation, and the out of production collectible limited quantity abnd high qualtiy "anything" will be a good store of value for the next decade, and probably rise equal or above inflation levels.

It's not so much the finances but the fact that I only keep one tool for one use - no need for two double action 357's (safe is full and no room for a bigger safe)

This would be a swap and I'm deciding which is the better gun

Interesting that on another Wesson page the opinion is more "keep the Ruger" and here it's the opposite, get the Wesson, it's making this choice hard.

The next purchase after this decision is made is going to be a upgrade to my trap shooting shotgun

I'm a big DW fan, and have a stable of .357's.

There's no doubt that the DW is a 'better' revolver than the Ruger (and I'm a big fan of Rugers, too!), but I dunno if the DW at that price is THAT much better than your Security Six.

I've bought a couple of very nice M15-2's in the last year or so for under $650, so, with no box/papers/accessories, etc., I'd say $750 is way high.  If it was really pristine, and did have everything with it, I'd say $650-700.  Prices are skyrocketing, though, so the gun may be worth it in a few months anyway !

YMMV

Jim
