OK so after buying a functional .357 DW I now have a craving for just a bit more..
I live in the amazingly komunist state of MD (which I loved untill I got the shooting bug)
and I have to wait a whole month to even think of buying another one....
But I'm pretty sure my next will be a DW .44 in stainless. I've seen quite a few on GB and
I am thinking that's where I'll look first. None around locally so the interwebs should help!
Any experiences anyone's had on them? I've never shot anything hotter than my 15-2
so I'm wondering about the recoil.... more? funner? banngier?
Thx for the info!!!
My 744 VH4 is my favorite DW to shoot. Just something about DW Big Bores!
Obviously the recoil is going to be more than a 357 but it's different. 357's seem to be sharper with more muzzle flip where as the 44 seem to put more force directly backwards in your hands (at least for me). The weight of the Dan also helps to tame the recoil of the 44.
With 44 Special loads its almost like shooting a 22.
Just my 2 cents...

I have loved my 744 for 25 years. I like the VH8 barrel better than the VH6 for it's additional weight and the reduced muzzle-blast. It definitely kicks more than my 715 which is my wife's favorite. However, she loves the 744 with 44 specials.
Like Jody said, the weight of the Dan makes it really comfortable to shoot.
Get a nice one and have a ball.

I have a 744 Monson with 4 and 8 inch barrels. It's a lot of fun.
I also have a 44 with 10 inch, 8 inch, 6 inch and 4 inch. I like the 10 inch the most. Planning on using it for deer hunting when the law passes in CT for handgun hunting. Soon I hope. Going to mount a scope on it, need to drill and tap the top of the rib for the scope rail and I don't have the correct drill and tap.
I think the earlier comment about the recoil being different than the 357 is correct. Less flip with the 44 mag.
Happyness is a Hot DW and a pile of used brass!!! Rich

I've been shooting a .44 for about 20-years and love the caliber, I started with a Smith until the eyelids were opened to Dan's. Now the DW 744 with 8" VH is my favorite. Once you've tackled the .44 then step up to the Supermags. Start with a .357 Supermag and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable a caliber it is, actually is easier to shoot than a .44. Good luck!

I have a 744 6VH that got to be a lot more fun to shoot with Hogue rubber fingergroove grips (as opposed to the very nice looking smooth wood grips). When you get one, check it for a ported barrel (not the shroud, most of the shrouds are ported). With a ported barrel you need lots more attention to removing the shroud for cleaning the ports and the inside of the shroud. I agree that the recoil is more forceful, but less sharp and snappy than .357 mag. I'd like to get a 4" for mine someday.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
