Hmm, it doesn't have the vent rib but I bought it anyway. It's really hard to see if it's ever been fired. Glossy blue, not a mark on it or the barrels.
However.
On the first six shots, three didn't fire double action. The ones that did fire went practically into the same hole. .
Called the dealer, and he said probably it was just gummed up from sitting for many years. Try oiling it and see what happens. He also asked if I had good ammo. Dunno. They were loads that I made with new brass that I'd bought just for this gun. CCI primers that I've been using for hundreds of rounds without a misfire with my S&W snubbie and auto.
So. What do you think?

Loosen the grip screw a. Bit and try it. Over tightening causes more probe with Dans than anything else.
The grip screw was a little tight. I'd hate to have to use Federal primers on one particular gun.. although it's not that big of a deal if that's what it takes. Maybe it just needs Shootist's cleanup? I have some Winchester primers, IIRC. I'll make up some ammo with CCIs and Winchesters and give it another go after loosening the grip screw and some lube. I really want to like this sucker.. it's a beauty.

The only time I ever had problems with primer strikes being light were due to the gun being full of burned and unburned powder and gunk. A good cleaning solved the problem. A lot of DWs have original lube in them too, which sometimes turns to a plasterlike substance due to age.

The main spring is not as compressed in DA as it is in SA. Therefore there is not as much potential energy available.
Springs do have a ratio of pounds per inch of compression. So clean it up, slick it up and have fun doing it!
For target SA I use any brand. For self defense DA I use Federals.
There's a reason the manufacturers don't want you to use Federals and Winchester primers in their auto primer tubes.
Endeavor to persevere,
Press on regardless.
Need little, want less, love more.

Thanks for the reply. I pulled the side plate off, and it is pretty clean in there. I'll go ahead and tear it down and stone, lube, etc. per Shootists thread.
I just bought 500 CCIs. Looks like a trip to another gun show. I haven't opened them, maybe someone will trade me for some Federals and a little boot.

All the advice above is sound, I will add my 2 cents just cuz.
Grip screw too tight, probably not the problem but the easiest to try so why not.
Super cleaning, even the firing pin channel.
Hammer spring may be weak or may have been replaced with a reduced power model previously.
Cylinder retention ball may need attention.
Timing and or lock up may need attention.
I tried to list them in the order of easiest to hardest. Good luck

Thanks for that. I've been calling around looking for Federal primers to no avail. I *did* fire some old military 38 spl ball ammo double action without issue today. Maybe it's just the CCI primers? Dunno. Seems strange to me that it doesn't like one particular primer. The single action trigger is beautiful, now, and it's a great shooter. It Shirley won't cost much to fix if there's anything wrong.

CCI primers are known for being hard, but just my opinion it should work with all primers. I would use switching primers as a last resort only after all the other issues were ruled out. I dare say a good cleaning and/or a spring replacement will fix the problem. Good luck

The biggest problem I'm having is deciding whether to keep it or not. The dealer said he'd take it back. Pistol packs don't grow on trees.. I've been looking for one for a while. This one looks pretty nice, only missing the belt buckle. I'd *prefer* a vent rib set. But this one is in my hands...

Keep it; back the grip screw off one turn or put a different spring in. You may still need to back off the grip screw a bit. FWIW, the standard shroud is harder to find, particularly in a pac, than the vented shroud. IMO, it's more 'collectable'. Regards, Ron
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Thanks, after a little soul searching, I called the guy and said to cash the check. I (we'll) get it sorted..
