I met a guy tonight at an NRA banquet and after talking awhile he learned i collect DW's and he likes Smith's. He has a stainless pistol pack in 357 he bought new. I have a Smith 460 XVR and do not really like it. Would this be an equitable trade? I have not seen the pack yet. I am second owner of the 460 and it has a grand total of less than 100 rounds through it.

While complete matched pistol packs have sold for as much as $1000; the average for a pack in like new condition is around $700 to $800 for the model 15/357 and $50 to $100 more for the stainless. Rare barrels like the 12" and 15" add another $150 to $200 to the pack price. The average price for your Smith is $900, so your gun is worth more than an average pack, but a primo pack with any extras will match up fairly even.

Stainless Pacs usually seem to go pretty cuickly & for decent money on the auction sites, from what I've noticed...and they are not as common as blued Pacs. From what it sounds, I think the trade would be pretty even.
Besides, if you don't really enjoy the .460 & you would enjoy the Pac more, and the trade value is this close, I think it's a no-brainer. I honestly doubt that you will be coming out on the storter end of the stick, if this Pac is as clean as it sounds.
Out of curiosity, what don't you like about the .460? That's been on my list of fun stuff to get, but so far have gone for the guns that have been on my list longer.

SMF, I agree with Charger.
If something came up that I was interested in, and I had a firearm that I just don't care for that could be traded, I would do it.
I wouldn't want to take a beating, but I might take a modest loss if it were something I would get more enjoyment out of.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I'll let yo know the results.
Charger,
I have shot all the Supermag calibers and my 475 Linebaugh and enjoyed them all, but the 460 has no finesse to it at all. It is like trying to hold an iron club with a grip on it. The recoil is abusive for the accuracy I thought it was able to achieve. I shot it benched at 50 yards under common circumstances with all my SM's to test its ability and felt that any of the SM's would outshoot it any day of the week. My 475 Linebaugh allows me to shoot it for a maintained period of time longer and with much more accuracy. IMHO S&W did a great marketing tactic with this gun, end of story. And I am sure there are as many success stories out there as the day is long on the caliber, just not here.

I have assumed that gun would have a pretty harsh recoil, it's odd that it's not very accurate though. There's an indoor range that also rents guns, I should probably see if they have one to try out, before I commit to buying one.
Anyway, not all guns can be good guns, that's just how it goes. I hope you have good success with your swap.

Well,
I am going to do the paperwork tomorrow. I ended up trading the 460 for a Monson stainless pack and an additional 15-2 blued with a 6" standard barrell. I'll forward those photos someday when the time permits. The pack only appeared to be missing the buckle. According to the owner the only barrell ever attached was the 8" and it may have had two to three boxes of rounds fired through it. It has the wood finger groove grips and a set of Zebra grips with it.
Is it tomorrow yet????

I don't know much about the 460 XVR, but are sure you're not gonna arrested for "Grand Theft-Pistol Pack"? I wouldn't be able to sleep either.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

It sounds like you got a great deal, those Zebra wood grips usually go for more than $60 alone and a spare shooter to boot. The buckles can be found on Ebay regularly for between $20 and $100. The top price has been only very recently. There are different styles of buckle; look for the pewter one with the revolver on the front. The Palmer buckles just have Wesson diagonally across the front and a bronze finish over pewter. Congrats and send pics...so we can all be jealous.

I was using some guidance at the beginning of this thread on what to do and it seemed like it was rather equal for the one on one maybe slanted his way depending on who's response you looked at. He offered the blued, it is a shooter, some blemishes on the shroud and I added my 460 Titanium dies and all my 460 brass as well to help offset. He was just as eager as I. I'll get 'em scrubbed and photo'd as soon as possible.
