I have a friend, wanting to trade me his Dan Wesson 357.   He can't seem to find the model number.  But believes it to be a 15-V8.

I have attached a couple pics he sent me.

The barrel says Dan Wesson arms 357 magnum CTG  and the frame Dan Wesson arms monsoon mass USA and the serial number 151827.

This is all he has is the Gun.
I'm trying to figure out the value and if that is the right model number.

Thanks

Close I think.

15-2 V8, IIRC the 15(no -2) had the pork-chop barrel.

does appear to be a 15-2 with an 8" vented but not the heavy lug. looks like a decent pistol from those 2 pics.  Value depends on how it shoots, action, accuracy and the like.  I personally would think in the 300 to 500 range. again depending on what you are willing to pay for it and the shape it is in. pics are not the best.

I would agree, in my opinion if it is in excellent mechanical and visual condition then $400 would be a ballpark figure for it, give or take a little either way.

Correct DW terminology on that is: 15-2 8V (barrel length first followed by shroud style)

No on has yet told you that this gun is sporting the Pachmayr "Gripper", easily the most sought after soft/rubber/nylon grip for a DW. Many years out of production and very desire able.

This is probably a 1978 (maybe a 1977) gun.

In the DW world, this is a $500 gun IF you want that barrel length and the gun is clean, shiny/bright, and functions properly. You will spend a few $$$ getting the barrel wrench from EWK and a spring kit.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Steve is probably correct about value. If you look on Gunbroker you will immediatly see what guns are NOT worth. Those are the ones with too high a starting price or reserve. Keep in mind that there is also 25-35$ shipping and in most cases a charge by your FFL of $ 20-30. A $ 450 auction price can end up being more than 500.

People were able to get personalized serial numbers, sounds like you have one. I have purchased a few used with somebody's personalized serial number on them.

There was an opportunity in the late 70's and early 80's for people to get custom S/N's. I have a listing of close to 100 guns with very similar (3 initials+1 digit) Serial Numbers, this list does not include any "ESD" guns.

This list was provided to me on the condition that it not be published or shared, but includes name and address of the original purchaser, and the date of the initial delivery/transfer. In the past I have been able to provide (privately) some info on these guns when they surface.

Just curious if this would be one of those personal serial numbers? I've been trying to find info on it. 20170307_2120452.jpgImage Enlarger

The "PD" part of that may likely be for a police department, the "C" may be county. Is there any more engraving on the gun, or is it just on the frame?

Thanks. I was wondering if PD could have been police department. I didn't know if they would had made custom serial number just for that and when. That's the only engraving and it's just on one side. Is that a factory engraving?

Depending on when it was made, it could be factory engraving, or it may have been done outside of DW prior to bluing. American Historical did quite a lot of DW's collector gun engraving, so it may have been done there.

JCPD is probably a police contract pistol, made for a town named "J_____ City."

With "067," that would indicate a mid-sized agency, with several dozen to several hundred officers.  If it was a major city, you could expect at least 4 digits to the SN.

I've seen some pretty elaborate engraving done on cop guns, especially in the South.  It seems almost like a counterpart to the elaborate gold designs painted on some fire trucks.

I'm a little late getting back to this one regarding the JCPD-XXX.  Here are 2 of them, in reversing finishes, that were purchased from one of the DW board members.  I was told that the "JCPD" serialization was offered to members of the Jersey City PD.  This particular set here is done in nickel and some type of black, which no one will ever know exactly what it is.  It's a really nice looking set, and the color scheme was the basis for the .22 hard chrome pack below.
