Mstan99999, the two tone effect is what we refer to as the barney effect. Dan Wesson's sometimes fade to a plumb color on different parts of the gun. It does not effect the gun other than appearance. Several of my Dans are severely Barneyed. As far as value I would guess at $350 to $450 but could easily go higher on one of the auction sites. You need to check to see if your friend has the barrel tool and gauge. You will need to get those if he doesnt have them.
Others may chime in with better info but welcome to the group as I am sure if you wind up making the trade, it wont be your last DW.

Welcome to the site! The Barney effect as it is referred to here is explained better in a thread somewhere here in the forum, but I believe if memory served me correct it had to do with the type of metal used to produce the frames, it differed from the barrel shrouds and the effect that aging and light had on the metal of the frame. If I do remember the strength is not affected at all, just the cosmetics of the gun. I believe most of the members with blued guns have some degree of "Barneying" on their revolvers.
Hope this helps a bit.

Even a "Barney" can still shoot pretty good, and you can also get it reblued.
TO THE ASYLUM! THE CRAZY PEOPLE ARE IN CHARGE HERE
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Most people don't care for the Barney look on their guns & the bidding on the online sites often reflects that...it's hard to say for sure though, until it's actually on an auction. You could always give your wife that gun, she might think it's purty! LOL
SMF is right though, it often seems that it's only a matter of time before the blued guns start to get a little purple character in them.
aboard & let us know if you end up with it! It will still be a darn good firearm, regardless of the color.

Good Night
Well, maybe Charger didn't actually say it, but I bet he wishes he did
Good Night for real this time

The Barny effect can be delayed by not shooting and keeping the gun in a humidity controlled safe, but then what's the fun in that. Occasionally early model DW's come up for auction with their original deep blue intact, or they were properly reblued to raise their salability. A true safe queen, of which there are some out there will have a DEEP blue that was the pride of Monson and continued with Palmer and the early Norwich's.

ohhh.. GREAT marketing idea..
"DESIGNER COLORS".. ONE OF A KIND..
CHICK GUN..
AND I think I read somewhere where they charge like $75 or so for a re-blue.. it's fairly reasonable... unless you like the
"DESIGNER COLORS" ..
then go for it.. maybe the bad guys will be so distracted by the barney-ed look that you won't have to shoot them...

Yeah, and if the distraction doesn't work & you have to shoot 'em, then you can name it your "Purple People Puncher" hehe
Steve, why didn't I think of that for my sig line, I love it! LOL!!

I will only comment to say value is to the buyer what he is willing to pay. Dan's are no longer made and while relative plentiful now will get scarce eventually. Smith M&P's are a dime a dozen and still in production. You have to decide what it is worth to you. You can probably guess how most of us would choose. Good luck.

I haven't been watching the M&P's values at all, so I'm absolutely no help in that regard. However, I would guess that if that package was offered on GB or similar, it would probably fetch somewhere in the $400-500 range, possibly slightly higher.
I'm basing that guess on the visual evidence that it does seem to have a fair amount of handling marks & assume a fair amount of use. If it was me involved in this deal & the M&P is in about the same shape as the Dan, I would probably do a trade in 8 minutes.
Then...after I owned the gun, I'd probably give it a re-blue job. Not only because it's got the Barney thing going, but the shrouds also have their share of bumps & bruises. A re-bluing would make the whole thing look all purty again.

No M&P 9 is going to go for near $400 used. If I wanted a Model 44, I'd trade my M&P 9c for this in a heartbeat, and I'd also plan to re-blue, shroud re-blue is around $50 and frame around $85 as I recall

I have never heard them called a Barney, But what was said was correct it had to do with the Steel that was used the only part that turns that color is the Frame, I have blued hundreds of older Dans and it did not happen alot, Winchester had the same problem with there model 94 lever guns, the Reciever will turn plum color and the rest of the gun will blue perfect, but only on certain eras of guns,4
