Imagine Arte Johnson  in his german outfit…

So  friend down here always hollers when he finds a DW at a pawn shop. So He texts me to go down and check out the 715 for sale.  I get there and I find this something or other DW .357.  At three away… its not a 715… its not stainless, nor is it blued, nor is nickel… it does seem to be of the same ilk as the presentation .44mags, that is seems "Dove".  Black trigger, hammer, front and rear sight and extractor. All else is some unknown gray.  Unfortunately, it is also completely and hopelessly mottled in rust spots. In fact it has a "patina" of  mottled pink/red, everywhere.

Other specs:

8" BA

tapped with very small and odd looking scope mount (also plated)

Monson Mass. 85xxx

large poorly fitted wood grip, single triangle

grip screw seem to be plated as does the barrel nut (odd)

No box,  tools, papers, ect…

So what say the brain trust?? Factory Dove or someones fancy?

Image Enlarger

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

Its a satin chrome (Dove Gray) gun.  It does appear to have a good bit of rust showing.  I saw one on GB a while ago looked similar, right down to the funky scope mount.  Its probablly worth grabbing if its not priced out of sight.

BTW I believe it is considered a 15-2 since its not stainless.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

I just bought a motorcycle.. so my funds are gone. If someone wants it they want $400.  I cant risk trying to clean that up.  Action seems fine, if has been shot, and pretty good turn ring, and pretty dirty.

I would be glad to snag it for someone, but we would need to be pretty quick, my funds are way low.

EXACTLY what I told the guy. I don't think it can be "buffed" and be fixed. Once you pay $400 for it and drop say $300 ... you have $700 in a MAYBE $500 gun.

If there were a box AND all the goodies... but as is, its just a sad end to a once really nice gun. ( dont get me wrong, its probably perfectly fine shooter).

It looks interesting, but I would hate to spend that much money re-doing it.

85xxx is a 1977 15-2, look for the trigger mounted overtravel screw and recessed chambers. Obviously a refinish job that needs to be completely re-done, looks like a sadly neglected. Maybe a $200 gun that will need a refinish and has a D&T shroud.

Looks like a good DuraKote project gun.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Those freckels look like maybe they could be polished out.  Chrome is a hard finish and will withstand a fairly agressive polishing.  I think the matte look would be removed and a shiny finish take its place.  Worth a try before refinishing ro Duracoteing.

Who knows screwy Maybe a less aggressive material used with a small sand

blaster may take the spots off and leave an original looking finish.

I say this because when I was at Erics to have some bluing done,

he sand blasted the top of a shroud for me before bluing it.

The finish after the sand blasting made the shiny bare metal

look like the dull satin sheen look of the "Dove" finish.

Still, $400 is alot for a possible crap shoot.

looks like it was partially phosphated ( kinda like parkerizing w/o the zinc or manganese) on non blasted, lightly sanded metal. @$200 it would be a great restorification project. if someone does pick it up for refinish here is a little blasting tip. use sanded grout in the cabinet. it will seriously dust but leaves an ultra fine finish texture perfect for a matte look.
