Just picked this up on Tuesday. This is the one with the front sight "loctite" in place with red loctite. I bought it from a guy in Georgia over ArmsList. I was a little wary as I normally either buy locally (Dan Wessons almost NEVER appear here) or through Gunbroker. However, the guy was straight up and a pleasure with which to deal.

It has a little bit of the "Barney" going on on the frame but it varies with the light. This thing is a BEAST compared to my "small" frame Dan Wessons. It's the first time I've handled a Dan Wesson large frame and I'm impressed! I've had Smith & Wesson .44 magnums in the past and though my memory may not serve me, I don't think they were as beefy as this gun. I've yet to take it to the range and I need to deal with the front sight issue, but I like it. In fact I sold a Smith & Wesson .44 magnum and the money went for this Dan.

I'm convinced he didn't know about the locktite or he would have said something. I don't know it would have broken the deal anyway.

No light tent and using my phone (which is really better than my old camera anyway, but doesn't allow me to play with the lghting and focus as much.

That's sweet. Is the front sight functional?  Now I recommend a 4" barrel.

That's a nice looking Dan!  That front sight looks like its still OK, if it were me, I'd just shoot it and not worry about the sight until something happens to it.  I rarely change the front sight unless I'm having a POA issue I can't dial out with the rear sight.  I don't particularly care what color the insert is so I have a mixture of front blade colors on my guns.

You WILL enjoy shooting that one I predict.occasion

Wait until you get a Supermag!  Have fun with the 44.  The 4" barrel is my favorite in that and the 45lc calibers.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

The sight is still functional. I wouldn't have know about the loctite had it not been for the sight insert.

When I started the negotiations to buy the revolver the pictures the seller sent showed the sight insert in place. He sent a plethora of pictures. However, some time between those pictures and the time I received the gun, the sight insert came out. I assume it was lost.

So, I checked the front sight and found tell tale signs of red loctite. I was able to remove the sight set screw but the sight was stuck tight. It wouldn't budge at all. When I looked in the case in which the gun was shipped I found the sight insert and was able to put it back in. I don't care about the color of the insert and even without it, the sight would probably be functional.

I've been looking for a blued 4" barrel and shroud. If I can't find one, I'll order one from EWK Arms. I have also emailed him to see if he thinks he could remove the front sight without damaging the shroud. I also have a link here about that, and the suggestion has been "heat" possibly with a soldering iron to loosen the sight. I may yet try that.

One other thought on breaking loose the front sight: you might try what I call Magic Lube, it's 50% acetone and 50% ATF.  Works better than any of the commercial stuff and the acetone might just be the right thing for cutting that loctite red.

BTW, That's a beautiful Dan.

Interestingly, I've read about using acetone on red loctite. As long as neither the acetone or the ATF would damage the bluing, that just might work.

Very nice .44 magnum. I agree the Dan Wesson large frames (and small frames too) are really built beefy and solid. I usually don't like to shoot larger calibers that much but my .44 magnum Dan is much more of a pleasure to shoot than other brands of .44s I have shot.

It's interesting you should say that. I've had three .44 magnums, each a S&W. My first was a very nice reblued 29-3, no lock, but not pinned and recessed. The second was a no lock V-Comp, Performance Center 629. I'm not sure of the revision, but it didn't have a lock. The last, which I recently sold was a Lew Horton, 3" 629-5, no lock. Each was pretty brutal and I don't consider myself sensitive to recoil.

This one isn't going anywhere.

Grip choice can also affect the felt recoil. I usually use a rubber Hogue or LB's finger groove grips on my big bore DW's to help tame the recoil.

I like a smooth grip like the one's that are common to the 44's. They allow some recoil to dissipate by slight movement in the hand. I will say one thing, to comfortably shoot the the 44 for any length of time I unlearned that lock up the elbows, wrist and shoulders technique used on lesser calibers. Now I can do pretty good one handed by letting the gun do it's thing. Sort of accommodating the gun instead trying to make the gun accommodate me.

SIGWolf, if I could make a suggestion. I have a scoped 744 V6. If I were you I would get an EWK RH shroud and piccatinny adapter in 6". Use your barrel and nut . Scope it, it's the bomb. I'd say get a 4" but it might be too short for a scope, but not a red dot.

Thanks Ole Dog for the suggestion. I've only scoped a S&W model 41 .22lr and that with a red dot. I've never really scoped a handgun of any real caliber.

So, the RH shrouds are not piccatinny? Where do you get the adapters?

Eric at EWK makes them . The shroud and adapter would be less$ than  an assembly off ebay. The adapter is the mount.Just need rings. It is light and slick. Mount it to bring the scope over the reciever using an extended eye relief scope.
