It seems a large portion of the DW .44mags I've seen or inquired about are ported. It also seems that this is true of the early blued guns.
Was this something that was routinely done at the factory or is it mostly or always going to be aftermarket?
I'm not a fan of porting in general. I know it has it's benefits but I don't particularly like it.

The Monson .44's were all made with ported shrouds, as far as I know. Or, at least the 6 & 8" ones were, I don't think the 10's were necessarily. Although I could be wrong...I'm still on the learning curve myself, regarding these. I believe the guns were shipped with a ported & non-ported barrel...or maybe the owner had the option of buying the non-ported barrel separately, not sure on that one.
The standard barrels are much more user firendly though, because of the upkeep involved in keeping the barrel & shroud clean to avoid a stuck barrel.

I think that the great majority of shrouds were ported, most of those seem to have been equipped with non-ported barrels. Probably a good way to do this, giving the owner the choice to go ported with the purchase of a (less costly than a shroud) barrel.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

CF is correct. The 4, 6, and 8 inch shrouds on all Monson made 44's and 744's were ported. The 10 inch shrouds were not ported. Most were shipped with un-ported barrels (like for dealer stock) unless the customer ordered a ported barrel.
I don't know if that continued at Palmer and Norwich or not.
The 41's and 741's did not have ported shrouds or barrels an neither did
any of the SuperMags.

Palmer started the the new style porting.
I remember an article from the Palmer days when they were talking about a compensated barrel nut. Look alot like the 1911 bushing compensators. They evenhad pictures in the article. I never saw one in real life, so I guess they never made production.
