Howdy Gang,
Been a while. A question was thrown at me the other day and I thought I would pass it on to you to ponder on. " What happens to your collection when you have gone to that great reloading bench in the sky?" If some of you are like me you have shooters, retired shooters and safe queens. All in beautiful to semi beautiful condition. I gave different answers such as "It won't matter to me" to "I'm taking them with me." A lot of you have children to pass them on to. Some don't. I hope all of you have someone who will care for your prized collection the way most of you do now. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm taking mine with me.

Dan, long time no see!
on a serious note I have started writing down a list of my "stuff" and pricing for my wife and family.
I have started to show my son what goodies I have and what goes with what so he will at least be able to help my wife sell it.
My Dad did the same thing with me and it helped my Mom a lot. He was into Model A cars and she wasn't so she didn't have a clue about what was what and what it was worth.
Some guy she and I didn't know approached her a few weeks after my Dad passed and pressured her to sell his lathe and mill with all the tooling for 1000. She called me and I told her the value of the stuff and suggested she add some "get lost $$" to the price.
She did and he did.

I know that what I've bought started as a investment beyond my 401k which we all know has been in the tank for the last 10 years. My records show what I payed and a adjusted value of its worth based on what others have sold for. I feel the appreciated value (Obama value) will never go down and the extra monthly in come will help the wife or family make good use of my retirement funds. This way I won't have to worry about the gains or losses of the 401k. A few of the guns are ear marked to some family members, others can be sold with the help of my son, here and on GB.comhopefully he will be able to post pictures better than I can

Some time ago I told my wife to sell the stuff off and enjoy the money. I guess the grandson heard me 'cause shortly after that he told Grandma that if anything happened to Grandpa not to sell anything, he wanted it all. Guess I get no say in it any more.

I've thought some about this. Relatively speaking, I don't have that much. There was a woman or couple on the S&W forum who had two large safes chock full of vintage S&Ws. I can't even begin to imagine what they are all worth. My lawyer, when I wrote my will, suggested not to identify specific things to go to specific people, but I'm sure there are exceptions.
Mine would go to my kids who would take care of them, keep what they want and sell what they don't want. I have some good trusted friends that would assist them in selling at a good price. The problem is, you just don't know who will survive you and who won't.
As you say, YOU won't care what happens to them once you're gone. All in all, it's just "stuff".

Dantanna good to hear from you! Well I am only47 so hopefully I will be around to enjoy my firearms for a long while. I have given the subject some thought though. Last winter I took time to record my complete inventory, and I put columns for what I paid for each gun, and also a good estimated value in today's market. I explained the list to my wife, in the event she needs it at least she has a guideline.
I have 3 daughters, 2 of which have a mild interest in shooting so they are aware that they would be welcome to keep any they desire. (And they are not shy about pointing out to me the ones they want!). Most of my collection would not interest them but I do have the thought that maybe someday they will bring home son-in-laws who might share my interests.
I have told my wife that if she ever needs to sell off any Dan Wessons, she is to contact somebody on this forum for assistance. Also she is aware of the local gun shop that I frequent, where there are trustworthy guys who I believe would be of help.
