Hi all- can't figure out what has gone on here.  The frame where the crane latch notch is has worn through to the barrel threads.  It looks like it could be factory or done by a gunsmith?  It is a Monson gun with a 3XXX serial number.  I have another .44 Monson (bottom picture) that looks completely different but is a 13XXX serial.  This was a gun show purchase and I didn't look carefully enough- still seems to lock up ok and the barrel threads fine- safe to shoot or a parts gun?serial-3xxx.JPGImage Enlarger

I'm going to guess it was a hack job to try to correct a latch issue, rather than disassembling and replacing the spring...  I'd shoot it- plenty of barrel steel to take care of pressure.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

To the paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers:

if you find one...what's your plan?

Yep- I agree with you guys.  It looked so planned out with the beveled trapezoid that I thought maybe it was some known modification or something.  Not sure why they would have gone so deep, seems like just a tweak would work if you were going that direction- very strange all around.  Bummed that I missed it- buyer beware and all.  Merry Christmas everyone and straight shooting in 2017!

Aesthetically, it leaves some to be desired but functionally, it's just fine.  The majority of the pressure is absorbed in the cylinder before ever getting to the barrel.  Enjoy shooting it.
