Hi, I'm new to the forum.  I have a Dan .357 model 15.  I don't get to shoot it that much, unfortunately.  I did shoot a couple of days ago with no problems. When I was cleaning it I found an empty hole on the left side of the frame almost at the top of the cylinder. I don't know if it had a pin or allen screw in it.  I have looked online and I'm guessing it is the firing pin roll pin.

Could someone tell me if that is right and if it is dangerous without this pin.  I don't know if it was missing when I shot the other day or not.  I only noticed it was missing when I cleaned it.

If it is the roll pin, can I buy one and replace it myself or does it need a gunsmith?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

My guess is it's in there; stick a small pin in there to see if you can feel it.  Not many folks disassemble the firing pin.  If it is missing, replace it before firing again.  It's just a roll pin- pick one up at the local hardware store and cut it shorter, if needed.

BTW: dwf-welcome

Best Regards,

Ron

Thanks Ron. I will check to be sure the pin is missing.  The empty hole was apparent enough that it jumped out at me when I was cleaning the gun. I didn't disassemble the firing pin, I assume the roll pin must have worked its way out. Thanks for the info.

If the roll pin is missing you would be able to push the firing pin out from the front side.  If you can't push out the firing pin it is most likely in there.  It's a 1/16th roll pin.  Stick a 1/16th pin punch in the hole - if it doesn't pass through hole freely it's in there.

I went and took another look and it isn't the firing pin roll pin, it is the bolt just below it that is missing.  What does it do and is it a standard allen bolt that I can find in a store or is it specific for this gun?  Any ideas?

I found a diagram of the gun online and I am missing the short side plate screw.  Is that a common screw that I should be able to find?  Any idea what size I need?

If you look on the right hand side of this page you will see EWK, go to the site, you will find the side plate screws there.

And while you're there, buy a spring kit and tune that puppy up!

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
