I recently lept on a blued Pistol Pack setup on Gunbroker and frankly don't know all that much about them (other than I wanted one).  I can't yet show full pictures as it is still at the dealer with Washington's stupid background check.

What I bought is blue came with the 4 barrels vent-rib barrels, 2 sets of wood stocks (checkered square butt and smooth round w/ finger grooves, no zebra), a barrel wrench (yellow, 3 sided), belt buckle, instruction sheet and an envelope with sight blades and feeler gauge.  The suitcase has yellow fabric over the foam but no keys.  It is a Monson gun with SN 285xxx.

It seems to be in very good condition with little wear.

I should have mentioned that I had seen a patch in many Packs but wasn't sure it was always a component.

I also wondered if the fabric color was different at different times.

Over time, the plastic in the tool becomes brittle and will crack or shatter with use, so it is usually relegated to a collector's piece. You will want to get an all metal tool from EWK or Dan Wesson.

Good info.  I have an EWK one that came with my .44, but I see they have different ones for .44 and .357 (makes sense due to the bore size at least).  I'll order one and the gauge and wrench kit.

Check underneath the foam on top and bottom of case, sometimes the key is there.

Early packs with the black suitcase had no cloth. Late Monson American Tourister cases with the swivel latch had no cloth and blue foam. All packs in between had the yellow cloth. Some, like the field pistol packs, had a yellow leathery cloth. Some folks replace oily and soiled cloth with different colors because it is near impossible to match the yellow DW cloth.

Packs came with 4 red front sights installed and 2 each, yellow and white in the manilla envelope. Your gun was made in the early 80s and most packs had the steel tool. Your plastic tool may not be original. As Stinger said, they are fragile when old. When you tighten the nut, snug is enough. Do not overtighten. I suspect that is why plastic tools break.

Are the extra sights just for insert color preference?  And 2 of each so you can in theory replace the site on all 4 barrels (though not with the same color, unless you like red)?

I'll probably "borrow" one from the Pack to put on the long .357 Max barrel that I just got with no sight.

I'm glad I held off on getting a .357 EWK wrench as the Max has an all-steel wrench with it.

The EWK wrenches are better built (HD) than the factory metal ones. JMHO

The 357 Max tool will not work on the 357 Mag. The Max is a Supermag frame. Much larger and the tines on the tool will not line up with the slots on the smaller 357 mag nut.

The different colored inserts in the sights are for contrast against the colors of the target. Red inserts get lost against a red bullseye. Wite won't work well against some white targets. Yellow seems the best for most targets. I don't know how  colorblindness would matter but it gives folk choices. The Wesson sons made some florescent inserts in several colors including blue and green. I don't know if they still make them but they show up on eBay occasionally.

If you have the 91/2 barrel you may need a narrower and/or a shorter front sight. There are Patridge sights that fit that bill.

Ah...I made an assumption that the .357 Max and Mag shared a barrel contour.  I do have a .44 EWK wrench so I could buy just a pilot for that, but I'd probably rather have a full wrench for each gun.

How does the compensator work?  It was said that it serves as the barrel nut.  Can a regular nut be used instead of the comp?  I don't have one in the kit I got and I don't think I'd want to put the comp on the 4" barrel.

Yes, a barrel nut can be used instead of the compensator  DW will sell them but shipping is high so maybe buy any other parts you want or two or more of then. eBay has them often too.

Thanks.  Just placed an order with EWK.  Got a small frame wrench plus pilots for a couple of calibers, the barrel nut, tool set and a green fiber-optic front sight.

You poor buggers living in blue states, I honestly don't know how you put up with it. Seriously, I can obtain a new-to-me gun in 15 minutes...maybe 20 max. I had a lengthy diatribe written out but then decided that I should probably scquelch my opinion for the general peace for the site in general. I guess maybe I feel lucky today to be living in current times when I can still freely obtain a new (to me) firearm in such a short time span. And this is coming from a guy who grew up in the 70's, who remembers being able to walk into a local hardware store as a kid with his Dad & walk out (same day-no background checks) with a shiny new .22 for which he had been saving up for-for months. And did it cross my mind that I should take it to school the next day and blaze away? Or mow down anyone else I may see? Hell no!

Okay, maybe I'm getting off on a new diatribe...sorry. I just vehmently oppose the overarching reach government has become in so many instances lately. Grrr...

Been a busy week.  Was able to pick up my Pistol Pack on Saturday.  Seems to be in excellent shape overall with a few spots of storage blemishes that may or may not be correctable.  It seems to me that the only things missing are the keys and the fabric patch.  Each barrel even has a barrel nut (probably they are all like this, but for some reason I wasn't expecting that).

And here are my 3 DW revolvers together (all Monson guns)

I was contacted today by the seller of the .44 Mag gun saying he found the internal parts he knew he had for it.  He'll be sending those to me.
