I will soon be taking delivery of a Dan Wesson Monson model 15-2 with 6" vented barrel. It is my intention to use it as a base for creating a pistol pack. Not for resale but just so that I can fully experience the uniqueness that is Dan Wesson. I already own a model 15 porkchop with 4" and 6" barrel assemblies but given the rariety of the porkchop barrel assemblies I purchased the 15-2 as barrel assemblies are much more prevalent and there are a wider range of sizes. I would like to make my set as authentic as possible and was hoping to get some tips on how to identify era and location of manufator. Thank you.

I f you are building an authentic pack also know that 15-2's prior to about 99,000 have pinned front sights with no colored insert. Also, EWK shrouds have a one line roll mark. I am not sure how they differ from Palmer. Maybe another member can tell us. Oh! There are no factory 8 " porkchops. Lol. I think only Monson and EWK made 12" and 15" BA'S but the Monson are two line. I suspect everyone made 10 " ers with the appropriate rollmark. Other members can verify or correct this info.

My 15-2 came with a pinned (fixed), black, front sight. The rear sight is all black. I bought it used.
I thought the red inserts were the only way to go, so I had a gunsmith cut my sight and install an orange/red insert. An act I deeply regret in my older age. The smith did a good job. I wish I'd bought a new 6" VH shroud for it instead.
It's hard to think that once upon a time a guy could order just about any part of a DW 15-2 or shrouds/barrels from the big mail order places. I don't know what they'd keep in stock, but there'd be a full page for DW.

I just wanted to thank those who gave me tips, I now know to be looking for barral assemblies with two lines of text with fixed/all black front sights. I'm watching a couple on gunbroker and eBay unfortunately most of them seem to be the newer shrouds with the colored insert/interchangeable front sights, hopefully I'll soon be on my way to building a respectable pistol pack replica.

Here is a good example of the type of shrouds you need. Although this one is really a Model 15-2 not a Model 14 as stated in the ad.

This is an early 1976 Pack which is as complete as it can get!
This was before the brown case and gold fabric, patches and buckles we not available yet.
These Packs came just as pictured with the wood block.
Whoever got this one got a good buy.
Hekler keep watching eBay and other auction sights the pinned front sight shrouds do come along, there was a 6 in. recently.

Yeah I'm just disappointed that I didn't get into the Dan Wesson game until last year, seems like prices 4-5 years ago the prices were rock bottom compared to where they are at today, I would love to have gotten the whole pack but it seems that now its nearly impossible to find a complete pack for south of 1500, amazing that the auction you linked went for so little. Plus slowly building one myself will keep me occupied and be a more rewarding experience for me. Also the pictures on gunbroker were a little misleading (not in a bad way) but now that I received the gun it has the replacable front sights, a plus for me. I look forward to the journey and sharing it with the fine folks here. Thanks again for all of the help.

and some of the sellers on GB are less than genuine, and some others do not have a clue what they have. Now you also, have a bunch of bidders who don;t know either and another bunch who just want to strip'em down and try to make fortune off those who wish to preserve a heritage and be able to use what I personally consider the finest feat of American ingenuity.
