I know the 744's were made in Palmer all along, but when did they start stamping them with the "Wesson Firearms, Palmer, Mass, USA" stamp as opposed to the "Dan Wesson Arms, Monson Mass USA" stamp? I am looking at a 744 with a Palmer stamp, but a very low serial # (44S000XXX). Looking at the Serial Number Database, it shows it may be 1989 or so manufacture date based on the serial, but I thought they didn't change their name to Wesson Firearms until 1991 (according to Wikipedia)?
It also has a 2 line roll marked shroud as well. I know they transitioned to 1 line roll mark barrels, so maybe it's a transition gun or one pieced together over time?
Nothing is certain in Dan Wessonland. However, I feel fairly certain that towards the end of 1991 the switch was made. I have a DW Gold Series that was supposed to be a Palmer innovation and made from 1992 to 1995 but it is a Monson mark on frame and 2 lines on shroud. I have a 32-20 with a Monson frame and Palmer shroud. I have or have seen a number of guns that I think we're like that from the factory. I suspect they used the frames that were already marked Monson and shipped them with one line shrouds. Your 744 probably acquired a two line shroud in its earlier life. I have not seen any Palmer guns with Monson shrouds that I was sure they came that way from the factory. I have a 744 that has a 1991 serial number and that the original owner bought then and sent back for a trigger job. It is a Monson.
