Being new to the Dan Wesson world, I was wondering about the desirability of different barrel/shroud combinations. That is, is a ventilated rib better than a solid rib? Is a full underlug (I take it that is the heavy underlug) better than the short one? Which barrel lengths are most common/least common?
I guess what I'm getting at is for collectibility purposes, should I be searching for ventilated rib/heavy underlug shroud/barrels over the others?
My gun has the 6" ventilated short underlug on it now, but would like to get the 2.5", 4", and 8" eventually.

The 10, 12, and 15" barrels command the highest prices.
I find the 4" BAs to balance the best but I like the 8" or 10" BAs for any revolver I use to hunt with. Of course, you should have a 2.5" for conceal carry or nightstand storage and then you may as well keep the 6" for a traditional look. The 12 and 15" BAs are a necessity if you really like to wring out the last ounce of performance. Vented seem to be easier to find than non vented. For collectables- you may as well just keep your eyes and wallet open and get one of each length, vented and standard, heavy and standard...
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Absolutely! It no longer means very much to me that the barrels are interchangeable, after owning all the common lengths on half a dozen 15-2/715's, it's only 4VH for me. Cost me a bit of money to finally reach that conclusion, but DW is pretty much the only gun out there that let's you make that determination easily.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

It seems everyone has their favorites. I think like Ron. At least one pistol pack in each style at a minimum. As for as prices, the 6"in any style seems to be the most affordable as well as most common. The 4" and 8" are the most valued and the 21/2" is close behind. The vented shrouds seem to be more desirable than the invented but not because there are less of them. The least common is the heavy unvented but the most desired seems to be the VH. I find I am most accurate with an 8" BA. Anything longer than that I find the heavy Lug just that, heavy. I really like the look of a slotted shroud.
