While you can shoot 357 mag or even 38 specials out of a 357 max. its not going to produce the best accuracy. The bullet will have a long gap to jump from the case mouth to the forcing cone. In addition, sooting alot of shorter cartridges will carbon foul the chambers quickly making inserting the longer max rounds difficult to impossible. If you do shoot the shorter rounds, you will have to put extra effort into scrubbing the cylinder to remove that fouling otherwise it will become impossible to insert the full size max rounds.
With the model 40/740 being such a heavy gun, I can't help but wonder why you'd want to shoot a 38 special out of it. A few 357 mags I can see but 38's really?
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

You're absolutely correct--I really don't need to shoot 38's and I probably won't--also I really don't shoot that much--I generally only use my guns for hunting and a lot of the time when I'm in the woods I don't fire any rounds. But I may have the occasion to fire a 38 or 357mag and I wanted to be sure I wasn't going to damage anything.

no you will not "damage" anything, but as noted one HAS to clean and clean well after using ANY 'shorter' ammunition in any of these instances......you get attacked by indians, you put whatever you have handy to do the job, I've shot 22 longs and short in a 22 magnum in a pinch..........
and I shoot 38 special wadcutters almost exclusively in my 15-6VH...........

My own personal belief (more of my own rule of thumb) and take with your own grain of salt...has always been to shoot the round the gun was designed for. This would include the 357 Maxie, Mag & 38 Spl. If I wanna shoot a .38, I find a gun for that round & shoot the crap out of it, one chambered in a .357 Mag is usually only fed .357's.
I suppose if the "spousal contract stipulations" household gun agreement only allow for one gun under the roof, then I would probably ultimately land on the model 40, the .357 SuperMag. Because argumentatively, that baby will fire all three of them! Pop, Bang, and BLAM! You could even load the 'ol SM "dresser drawer defender" that in that sequence...pop, bang & blam! Not a bad way to win the (gun friendly) heart of your spouse in that circumstance.

No damage, just more caressing... erh I mean cleaning.
