Does anyone have info on these?
What years was the doorknob wrench provided & with what models?
I was looking at a very early '80's (late '81ish) .44mag kit that was supposedly a Pistol Pac, but the original case had been lost / destroyed.
It had
- The doorknob wrench
- 3 ported barrels, 4″, 6″, 8″
- only one grip (w/ DW medallions)
- No papers
I was having a hard time determining if it was a mix n' match or the real thing.
Dealer also mentioned that the doorknob wrench was provided with wood presentation cases - any info / pics on these?
Hey Dusty,
I have a photo of a pistol pac from 1992 which shows the plastic wrench. I'm thinking the door knob wrench didn't come into being until Norwich or at least after 92.
Also from the photos in the March 1981 issue of the Shooting Times the wrench was the earlier metal one which was similar to the plastic one that replaced it.
I don't think your dealer knows what he's talking about on this...

Great feedback, Thanks.
When he was telling me about it the pieces and dates just weren't adding up in my head. I had thought the door knob wrench was post Monson, but didn't know exactly. I believe you are right and it is a Norwich invention.
The Dealer is a good guy, provided full and accurate disclosure on everything and (IHMO) has the parts / package priced fairly. But like many folks, I don't think he has the minute detail on DW's to accurately assess exactly what he's got. I would be surprised if it ever was a factory pistol pac.
I passed on the deal only because it wasn't a complete vintage set, but wanted to do the homework and get the info up on the DWF.

The reality is, we have been working on answering those kinds of questions for over a year, from many sources. It would be an unusual dealer that had much accurate info about some of these questions, especially on some of this 20-30 year old stuff.
DWF is rapidly becoming The Authority
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

As said above the door knob is definitely Norwich, as for wood presentation cases; the only ones that I've ever seen were for the commemorative models, that were highly engraved and strictly for collecting. Were the barrel ports on each side of the front sight; Monson and early Palmer or slots in front of the front sight; late Palmer, Norwich, as well as DW/CZ today
just putting in .02 the ports along side the front sights are ports and I have now clue when they started when they put the slots in front of the front sight it was as a compensated barrel with a front thumb screw on the end of the shroud to form a chamber for the gases to expand and exit the slots on top of the shroud, again I don't know when this came about but believe it was around the time palmer guns were made 1992 or later.

Great info guys.
I believe the ports were on the side - not compensator.
I wasn't sure when ported barrels began to be offered, but the serial number on the frame is 0014XX so I'm estimating it is ~1981.
Do we know if ported barrels & shrouds were even available then?
Clearly the barrel wrench is an add in and not originally with the kit - which begs the question: where is the original wrench if it's a pac?
Zoom: DWA -- nice!
