That Model 22 was made in 1979, and is probably not factory nickel, and is possibly not nickel, unless the finish is really worn and dulled (perhaps it's a function of the lighting in your photo).
Most commonly the factory nickel left the rear sight, trigger, and hammer blued, and bright nickel would have a smoother, brighter, more reflective look.
Here is a 15-2 that I had redone about four years ago in bright nickel, pretty much the way it would have been done by DW
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

That S/N puts it into the earliest Model 22's that I know of. The finish could be pretty much any of the aftermarket silver finishes (NP3, Robar, Slickshot,...)
Be careful on polish, you do not want to polish through the finish to bare metal. Think about a good cleaning first, then maybe some Renaissance Wax.
That 15-2 is my baby and it has a great LB grip. I shoot it rarely, but I do shoot it.

I think Steve is correct about an after market coating, maybe hard chrome. It might have been done when new if no handling marks are showing. They are very easy to keep clean with oil and wiping. I have one I suspect is chrome. It is a 14-2 so had a satin finish. I cannot get a clear look on my phone. The serial number is very low, I am guessing it was made in 1979 or early 80 at the latest. Value is subjective but it obviously is worth what you paid. Finding other shrouds to match is problematic though. If you open it up you can test cleaning materials on the inside. Is the barrel blue?

Zooming in on your first picture and it looks like I can see some grain on the side plate. You won't see any grain on nickel. It is not hard to get a high gloss on a stainless Dan with polish and a lot of buffing. Beautiful pictures! Beautiful grips!! The unvented heavy shroud is very attractive and seldom seen. You got a great gun there!

All I can say is I handled (fondled) this gun several times and I'm betting nickel. Also the serial # "should" have an S if it is stainless, although I assume it is possible some were made without the S.
It's not bright nickel like Steve's, so it might be chrome. When the side plate comes off it should be possible to tell.
I love mysteries.

It's got that blueish tinge. Nickel has got that very faint yellow/ gold.
If' its nickel some Mothers polish will give that Dan a finish that reflects a foot deep.
After market nickle finish is as good as it's base metal preparation. If you got a satin or rough base your gonna have a satin or rough nickel finish.
Endeavor to persevere,
Press on regardless.
